ALBUFEIRA
(pictured) Architecturally the prettiest town on the
coast, and also the liveliest ! Make sure to visit the old town to the
west with its large square which hosts live music regularly. Lots of
restaurants, including a fabulous four story one built into the cliffs
on the beach, bars and discos.
FARO
Principal town, great for shopping. Houses several interesting museums,
historical buildings and picturesque gardens bordering the busy harbour.
SILVES
Lovely old city dating from the Arab occupation, dominated by the Moorish
Castle in which festivals are held during the summer.
GUIA
A picturesque & traditional small town, set just off the EN125 (direction
Portimao). Famous for its numerous & excellent restaurants.
VILAMOURA
Built at the site of an ancient Roman settlement, and next door to Quartiera,
Vilamoura is probably most famous for its marina (one of the largest in
Europe), and its championship golf courses. As well as a lovely beach
it is notable for its night-time recreations - casino, clubs, restaurants
& bars (many set around the marina).
LOULE
Substantial old historic town, set inland. Many old sites of architectural
interest, and a number of museums. Centre for artisan crafts - you can
buy ceramic tiles & pottery, woven & knitted goods, metalwork, copper
& brassware. Also has a delightful fresh produce market (open daily -
mornings are best!). |
